MAINE, NEW HAMPSHIRE & VERMONT JOIN "WAZE"

11/09/2015 09:02 AM EST

AUGUSTA, Maine; CONCORD, N.H.; MONTPELIER, Vt. (October 30, 2015) - The MaineDOT, New Hampshire DOT and Vermont Agency of Transportation (called Tri-State) today announced a unique data-sharing partnership with Waze (http://www.waze.com), the free crowdsourced navigation app that uses information from drivers to outsmart traffic in real-time. Tri-State and Waze will share their traffic data with each other to enhance each partner's ability to provide needed traffic information to the traveling public.

Director of Maintenance and Operations for Maine DOT Dale Doughty said, "In working with Waze, the Maine Department of Transportation is looking forward to more real-time situational awareness of road and driving conditions. This information is critical not only to the traveling public, but as the Waze community grows in the state, it will also be essential for emergency first responders to utilize this technology. Through sharing of information, we can all be emboldened to make better decisions and stay safe."

The mission of the Waze Connected Citizens Program is to help users of the app (called "Wazers"), along with drivers and local communities collaborate together to improve the accuracy, timeliness and availability of roadway information and to answer the question "What's happening on our roads right now, and where?"

NHDOT Assistant Commissioner said, "More than ever, motorists in New Hampshire and neighboring states are looking for the latest accurate traffic information so they know what to expect in their travels. This Tristate partnership and joint initiative with Waze will enhance our efforts to provide real-time traffic information for commuters, visitors, commercial drivers, and others as to what lies ahead on New Hampshire highways."

Waze will receive input from Tri-State such as feeds from road sensors and information on closures, construction alerts and other traffic-related events. Waze will send publicly available incident and road closure reports from its platform back to Tri-State. The program promotes more resourceful traffic monitoring by sharing crowdsourced incident reports from Waze app users. This two-way data share will return one of the most succinct, thorough overviews of current road conditions today.

Vermont Transportation Secretary Chris Cole stated, "This is an important step in our effort to create seamless traveler information across the region. "Combined with our other Tristate initiatives, Waze will help us deliver a consistent customer experience across borders throughout New England."

"This is the first time we've had three states collectively join our Connected Citizens Program in unison, making our newest partnership truly unique," said Paige Fitzgerald, Connected Citizens Program Manager at Waze. "With the data received from each state, we're providing the most reliable, up-to-date information about what's happening on the roads to thousands of Waze users in this tri-state region."
