Milton Free Public Library Introduces "Screen Free Zone" Encouraging Free and Creative Play.

The upstairs room of the "Little Red Schoolhouse", in Milton, New Hampshire, (the Milton Free Public Libraray) has been transformed into a center of creative play. Introduce your children to screen-free activities including building sets, musical instruments, costumes, puppets, word games, logic puzzles, and scientific exploration.
Milton Free Public Library's first Build It! event will be February 6 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for young people age 6 through 14. We will introduce our attendees to the various fun items available so that everyone can play as they choose.
You may arrive and depart as needed, but preference will be given to those who can commit to the full two hour session.
Sign up early, as space is limited.

Fun Fan Fiction
Attention all Milton High School Students: We are happy to announce our annual Fun Fan Fiction Contest of 2016. Students are challenged to take an existing work of fiction and change the ending, characters, or put in a plot twist to enhance the work. Three (3) prizes will be awarded to students based on creativity, use of the original author's "voice", and (ahem) grammar. Start creating now! Submissions are due February 5th.The prizes will be awarded at the "Nute Week" celebration, Thursday, February 18th. First place prize is $100, second $75, and third place $50.

Winter Carnival Skywatch
Let's take a moment to celebrate the winter sky during Milton's Winter Carnival. We will start at the Milton Free Public Library, 13 Main Street, Milton Mills at 5:30 PM, Saturday, February 13 for a brief presentation held by members of the New Hampshire Astronomical Society (NHAS). We will then head over to the Milton Town Beach. NHAS members will have several telescopes trained at the the night sky.

Lebanon's Maine State Senator, Ron Collins Invites Students to Participate in the Senate's Honorary Page Program.

 Augusta – Senator Ron Collins (R-York) would like to invite local students to visit the State House to take part in the Senate’s honorary page program during the second session of the 127th Legislature, which convenes in January.
As an honorary page, students take part in the legislative session by distributing documents and assisting legislators on the floor of the Senate. 

“Serving as an honorary page is an excellent way for students to get a close-up, hands-on understanding of state government,” said Sen. Collins. “They are able to learn about the legislative process, get to know the folks who represent them in Augusta, and hopefully gain a new level of enthusiasm for civic engagement.”
Parents or teachers can call the Maine Senate Majority Office at  (207) 287-1505 to sign up a student or group of students. Please have the name, grade, hometown, and school name ready for each student. In addition, please also have in mind a few different dates that would work well. For January and February, the Senate will largely be in session only on Tuesdays and Thursdays with more days of the week added in March and April.

Youth Deer Day is This Saturday.......October 24, 2015

 

  AUGUSTA, Maine -- This Saturday, youth deer hutners across the state get their own day to hunt deer.

  “Youth day is a wonderful way to introduce a young hunter to Maine’s deer hunting heritage,” said Chandler Woodcock, Commissioner, Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. “Hunting is an ideal tool to teach children about conservation, responsibility, patience and respect for our natural resources.”

  Youth hunters who possess a junior hunting license and are 10 or older and younger than 16 (either resident or non-resident) can hunt deer on this day if they are under the direct supervision of a parent, guardian or a qualified adult. Any person who accompanies a junior hunter other than that parent or guardian must either possess a valid hunting license or have successfully completed a hunter safety course. A qualified adult is a person at least 18 years of age approved by that youth hunter’s parent or guardian, and this person must hold a valid Maine hunting license or have successfully completed a hunter safety course. The accompanying adult cannot possess a firearm.

  The junior hunter on this day can take one deer of either sex only in those Wildlife Management Districts where Any Deer permits were issued. In WMDs where there are no Any Deer permits issued, hunters may only take an antlered deer. All laws pertaining to hunting during the open firearms season on deer apply on the youth deer day.

  Hunters can also transfer their Any Deer permits or Bonus Deer Permit to a junior hunter, or any other hunter. Certain restrictions apply, including that a resident permit may only be transferred to another resident, and a nonresident permit may only be transferred to another nonresident.  This transfer can be done online until 11:59 p.m. October 30, 2015.

Three Rivers Land Trust to Host Kite Flying Day on Acton Maine Farm, September 20th as Part of Great Maine Outdoors Weekend.

Three Rivers Land Trust hosts a kite-flying day for Great Maine Outdoor Weekend on September 20, 11 AM to 3 PM at the Hobb’s Farm, 651 Foxes Ridge Road in Acton. Rain Date October 4.

Acton – Three Rivers Land Trust invites the public to join them for a day of kite flying for Great Maine Outdoor Weekend at the Hobb’s Farm at 651 Foxes Ridge Road in Acton.

Kite flying is a great way for families to enjoy the outdoors together and Great Maine Outdoor Weekend is about celebrating all the outdoor recreation events that Maine has to offer.

Bring a picnic lunch and a kite if you have one. The Trust will have some kites to share. Members of the Nor’Easters Kite Club of South Portland will also be participating. They will bring a variety of kites to demonstrate.

“We love celebrating Great Maine Outdoor Weekend,” said Three Rivers board member Larissa Crockett, a steward of the Hobb’s Farm. “Hobb’s is such a wonderful place to spend time outside, and we hope many families will come out to enjoy the day.”

The event begins at 11 AM and runs through 3 PM. However, the Hobb’s Farm is open to the public to enjoy at any time of the year, so families should feel free to linger and fly kites as long as they would like.

It's Time Again For the Acton Fair!!!!

Time again for the Acton Fair

ACTON -The Acton Fair starts today, Thursday, Aug. 27, and will run through Sunday, Aug. 30.

The fairgrounds are located at 550 Route 109 in Acton. The price for admission is $8 for adults, and children under age 12 can get in for free.

Celebrating its 150th anniversary, the fair will have many highlights in the coming days. The fairʼs program of scheduled events can be accessed online at www.actonfair.net, and the itinerary promises a variety of activities for all ages.

According to Donna Goodrich, the treasurer for the York County Agricultural Association, The Legends, Sanford's radio station at 1220 AM or 102.3 FM on the dial, will broadcast live from tonight's Cruiseʼn Car show while highlighting music from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s.

The Acton Fair features traditional agricultural events, such as a woodsmenʼs day, an antique tractor pull, ox and horse pulling, sheep dog demonstrations, crafts and plenty of vendors selling food and crafts. The Lions Club will be there, as always, catering to a long line of regular customers. Sanford-Springvale Rotarians will be on hand to sell their famous chicken livers. There will be amusement rides too.

In honor of the fairʼs 150th year, special awards will be presented to winners in the pulling ring and in the craft and cooking competitions. Bigger monetary prizes, ribbons, and a year's worth of bragging rights will go home with each eventʼs lucky winners.

Goodrich said that kids are encouraged to get involved with the hands-on Farmerʼs Lilʼ Helper program, which allows children the opportunity to milk a cow, collect eggs and learn important facts about where their food comes from. 4-H competitions, a pig scramble, and a pedal-tractor pull will grant kids of all ages an opportunity to compete and to become a part of Acton Fairʼs longstanding history.

"Weʼre trying to have lots of things going on for people to watch and do at the fair," Goodrich told Sanford News Contributor Penny Mills in last week's issue of the Sanford News.

Volunteers Come Together In Milton NH to Create a Memorial Playground

An amazing effort by more than 65 Community Volunteers in the Town of Milton, NH as men, women and children from several generations came together at the entrance to the Milton Town Beach to create a beautiful playground, a loving community tribute to former Milton Selectman, Jim Culverhouse.

Many friends and Culverhouse family members were on hand over the 2 days, 16-20 man hours, that it took to create the beautiful playground.
Culverhouse himself, passed away a few years back, but people in Milton remember how much he loved the children and was instrumental in creating a great Recreational Department to give the young people in town opportunity for sports and other programs right within the town limits of Milton.

Helping with the project were past and present Selectmen, Department of Public Works, Fire Department, Police Department, Town Clerk, Highway Department, The Friends of the Milton Free Public Library and the Librarians of the Library, the Assessor's Department and many Milton residents and children.

Milton-ite, Les Elder took the time to share some of his photos of the day with me and to let me know how very proud he was of the people in his town. "This is Community with a capital C", said Elder in our phone conversation, "This is what small town living is all about. It was so moving to have everyone there, young, old, town government, residents, business people, family groups, singles... I just can't explain how good that felt."
According to Elder, the playground is free of charge and open to the public.

Celebrate Children's Days on the Farm, New Hampshire Farm Museum This Weekend

July 11th and 12th are Children’s Days on the Farm,

 Saturday & Sunday 10 am- 4 pm

 The most fun kids can have on a farm, farm animals, chicken tours, fairy houses, crafts, making butter and ice cream, blueberry pie eating contest for kids, sack races, hoop rolling,

stories, and games both days. 

 Belgian Meadows Farm gives horse-drawn wagon rides on Saturday

and there will be a puppet show. 

 On Saturday Silhouette artist Leona Hosack demonstrates and will cut silhouettes of children or adults for a modest fee.

Summer Nature Exploration for Kids Every Sunday at Wolf's Neck State Park

 

FREEPORT, MAINE ­­– Wolfe’s Neck Woods State Park is offering a new series of public programs designed for children ages 7-10 and their caregivers.

These new programs focus on hands-on nature discovery and nature awareness. Programs will include projects and experiments, active games involving stealth and creativity, and multi-sensory exploration.

Summer Nature Explorations invites any kids who want to get to know the plants and animals of the park better, or who just want to feel more at home in the natural world, to come to Wolfe’s Neck Woods State Park.

Programs are one hour long and are free with park admission. They take place on Sunday afternoons from July 7 through August 30 at 1:00 pm. Kids and their caregivers are welcome to come to one, several, or all programs.
