The Noble Squires Middle School Varsity football team has worked hard this season and has earned their spot in the Championship game for the first time in 17 years!
Last Sunday's game placed the Squires in the Championship when they defeated Falmouth in overtime. This Sunday, November 8th at 1:00 pm the Noble Squires will be hosting, for the first time ever, the Championship game at our own Kaplan Field, located at the Middle School (the old High School as many still refer to it) on Cranberry Meadow Drive in Berwick.
The Squires will be up against the Gorham Grizzlies who earned their spot in the Championship game by defeating Marshwood. This is a great accomplishment for the Team. Please come and show your support. Let’s fill the bleachers and cheer the boys on!

Chief Meehan and EMT Rudnicki Stop For Lunch at Hanson School Summer Meals Program.

 

Today Chief Daniel Meehan and Lebanon EMT / Firefighter Windy Rudnicki dropped in for lunch at the Hanson School. Summer Camp Students at the school were happy and surprised when the Chief and EMT sat down to lunch with them, sharing turkey and cheese sandwiches on whole wheat rolls (although the Chief asked for the PB&J Uncrustables but Miss Penny advised him they were all out).

Chief Dan spoke to a table full of boys about such things as fire trucks, hoses and ladders.

 

 

EMT Windy spoke the group of children she sat with about what to do if there should ever be a fire, and how to

STOP, DROP and ROLL

should their clothing ever be on fire.

 

 

All of the children were very receptive to the Chief and firefighter as they enjoyed chatting and eating together. All Lebanon residents are invited to enjoy the School Meals Program. You never know WHO is going to drop by!!

Lunch at the Lebanon Hanson School was a big success!

Beginning today, and everday, Monday through Thursday, until August 6th, the MSAD60 School Nutriton Department is offering FREE meals for all Lebanon kids under the age of 18. Parents or Lebanon residents are also encouraged to attend, paying $4.50 for a nutritionally balanced meal, served with a smile!
I had only a moment to speak with Miss Penny, the Kitchen Manager for both the Lebanon Elementary School and the Hanson School. I laughed as she turned several people away from the pizza window, encouraging them that they MUST have veggies to get the pizza.
According to Miss Penny (she told me EVERYONE calls her Miss Penny) there had been several paying adults, but most of the meals today went to Lebanon Summer Camp members and Lebanon Summer School children.
Any complaints?? Only 2. First, there was NO coffee, Miss Penny encourages you to have milk. Second, all the available seating was taken up by the children. There was just nowhere to sit down and be comfortable. I noted that several residents attending with their families, took their trays outside and enjoyed their meals on the lawn.
But the JOY I noticed in the children giggling, chatting and having lunch together made up for ALL of that!! School mascot, Bailey, the little dog rescued by School Counselor Stephanie Bean from a shelter in Alabama, wandered around the cafeteria saying hello to all the folks attending the meal. She was so well behaved, never begging or stealing food, and accepting pets and hugs from the children. According to Ms. Bean, Bailey is a fixture at the school, attending school with the children every day of the year.

"She's usually not allowed in the cafeteria," said Bean, "But it's summer rules, and the kids just love her."  We thought Bailey was a wonderful addition to the cafeteria, and hope she gets to attend lunches all summer!!

If you'd like to enjoy a great school style lunch, feel free to stop by the Hanson School Cafeteria between 11:30 and 12:30, Monday through Thursday (no meals on Friday or over the weekend) or you can come and enjoy Breakfast from 8:00 am to 8:30.

Maine Students Warned Assessment Opt-Out May Cost Graduation

A.P. Dillion pointed out this disturbing article out of Maine.  The Bangor Daily News reports that the Maine Education Commissioner says students who opt-out of Smarter Balanced may not graduate.

As debate over standardized testing ramped up in the Legislature, the Maine Department of Education again cautioned parents and school administrators this week about the possible fallout from opting out of statewide assessments. Among the potential repercussions — a school could withhold a student’s diploma.

“No one is going to force a child to sit and take the test,” Acting Commissioner Tom Desjardin said in a written statement released Wednesday. “[Parents and students] do not, however, have a right to be shielded from the consequences of that act, which could range from action by the school district or loss of federal funding for the school.”

The article notes several school districts who make taking the standardized test a graduation requirement.  This is mainly done to make sure a school district achieves the 95% participation benchmark required under No Child Left Behind.

In SAD 60, if parents want to opt their children out of the Maine Educational Assessment, they must sign a form stating that they understand that all schools in Maine are required by federal law to have 95 percent of their students tested or the school could face financial penalties.

It’s unclear how many other districts in the state have similar graduation requirements. Neither Desjardin nor the Maine School Management Association could name others off hand, and no reliable record exists on the varied graduation requirements in districts across the state.

However, student handbooks available on school websites indicate that Old Town High School and Lake Region High School in Naples also require students to take the state assessment in their junior year in order to graduate.

Lake Region Principal Ted Finn said Friday that in his five years at the school, which has had the requirement since the 1990s, no student has failed to graduate because they didn’t take the test. Students have failed to graduate, but never solely because they didn’t take the state test, he said. As of Friday, no juniors at Lake Region had opted out of this year’s exam.

The Maine Legislature is considering a bill, LD 1276, that would end the state’s participation with Smarter Balanced.  A bill, LD 695, that would codify and clarify a parent’s right to opt their student out from standardized assessments will be considered by the full House and Senate even though it was not recommended by legislative education committee.

Rochester Schools Ban Lebanon Resident from School Property After Complaints from Several Families.

When people in Rochester speak, their town government DOES listen.
Despite being very careful until I had confirmation paperwork IN MY HAND, I can now tell you that the reports of our former Selectman being issued a NO TRESSPASS order to the many Rochester Schools and being ordered to stay away from school properties after the complaints from the parents of several Rochester school children, ARE, INDEED TRUTH.
Below you will find a copy of the document, obtained through a Right To Know request on the Rochester School Department this week.

 

The document states that the individual named, may NOT be on any Rochester School property, and that the order will be enforced by the Rochester NH Police Department.

Notice that the order is not affectionately signed, "Thanks, Mike"....but just as a school official SHOULD sign their name, in full, along with his title, Superintendent of Schools.

One would have to wonder why Rochester would protect their children and yet Lebanon has no such order in place, even after the posting of many of our children and grandchildren along with slanderous and hateful remarks.

It's a question to ponder.

Perhaps Lebanon parents, armed with a copy of this NO TRESSPASSING ORDER from Rochester, could make a little sense to the Lebanon MSAD60 School District and request similar protection for our children??

Lebanon Elementary School and Hanson School "Celebration of Learning" a Successful Event to Showcase Education.

A wonderful time was had by all attendees at the Lebanon Elementary School and Hanson School on Upper Guinea Road tonight as the children showcased their work in a "Celebration of Learning".
Both schools were open to the public and the hallways and classrooms had become a sea of artwork, photographs, tri-fold presentations and places for people to sit and chat with their neighbors and their children's teachers.
The Kindergarten classroom presented a "Healthy Snacks for You" exhibit, while Grade 1 had produced "Birds of Lebanon" calendars which were for sale for a $5 donation. The Second Grade had a "What Crawls, Jumps or Flies in Our State of Maine" project and Grade 3 showed off all they had learned about wolves. They've actually adopted one wolf, which they have named "Bandit" and were selling "PROTECT WOLVES" bracelets in order to raise the funds to adopt as many more as possible.

 

Of particular interest was the Fourth Grade's National Parks exhibit, with a lot of artwork and information on saving our National Parks and how to go about becoming a voice for future legislation. Our Grade 5 students have been learning about the Revolutionary War, and have also done many projects on newspaper reporting, even going as far as to print a Revolutionary War Era style newspaper, and learning about tea staining documents to make them resemble old paperwork. Their work, entitled "What is Worth Fighting For?" was very interesting and had many people reading and acknowledging the in depth study and reporting styles.

 

Ms. Mangan's Class had done a special "Insect Unit" presentation, and Ms. Howards Class presented a "Living the Code" Board Game.

There were many chuckles regarding the Lebanon Elementary School Green Team's presentation of a robot-looking fellow made from recycled materials. However, there were a lot of people taking pride in the fact that our Elementary School won the "School of the Year" for 2015 for their recycling efforts!!

 

There was a neat presentation by the Hanson School Resource Room students on "Wolves in Fact and Fiction", which tied in nicely with the Third Grade's project on adoption wolves.

The Second and Third Grade students did very nice concerts for the community, singing in the Hanson School Gym under signs boasting words such as "Respect", "Responsibility", "Empathy and Compassion", "Collaboration", "Perseverance" and "Craftsmanship". It was nice seeing these things being taught in our schools. And even nicer hearing young children's voices as they sang about Spring, Summertime, Lighthouses, Angels and a playful round of "Yoo-hoo's".

Outside, by the walkway that leads between the two schools, the PTO was having their Annual Ice Cream Social. Everyone stopped to enjoy a sweet treat, featuring either chocolate or vanilla ice cream, some flavored syrup sauce, whipped cream and cherries.

 

 

Thank you to the Administration, Teachers and Students of the Lebanon Elementary School and the Hanson School for providing such a wonderful event for our community. Our schools are, and should be, a source of community pride, and our children are the future of our town and our country. Thank you to the Lebanon PTO for providing such an enjoyable community time with their Ice Cream Social.

 

 

 

 

Lebanon Elementary and Hanson Schools Host "Celebration of Learning" on Thursday Evening, May 21, 2015.

Thursday, May 21st is a big night for the kids at the Hanson and Lebanon Elementary Schools!! 

Schools will be open from 6pm-8pm for "Celebration of Learning". 

The public is invited to come and see

all of the individual displays of student work. 

There will be two musical concerts under the direction of

Mrs. McCardell. 

The second graders will perform at 6:00

and the third graders will perform at 6:45.

In addition, there will be a school-wide art show,

featuring the work of every student. 

Bring your sweet-tooth, because the PTO will have their annual

Ice Cream Social.

Third grade resource students have been studying about wolves and will be selling "Protect Wolves" bracelets in individual student made gift boxes for $2.00.  All money raised will go towards adopting a wolf and support "Wolf Song" in Alaska.

The last day to register your child for the Lebanon Summer Camp is quickly approaching. All arrangements and sign ups must be complete by June 15, 2015.

MSAD60 School District Voters Pass Nearly $38.2 Million Dollar Fiscal Year Budget. (Repost from The Lebanon Voice)

NORTH BERWICK, Maine - MSAD 60 voters approved a proposed nearly $38.2 million budget on Tuesday.
The new $38,167,372 budget is nearly a half-million dollars more than last year's.
In Lebanon, voters OK'd the budget, 90-49, while in North Berwick it was approved 103-29.
Vote totals in Berwick were still not available at the Central Office this morning, but a Berwick official had informed school administrators that it had, in fact, passed.

Don't Forget to Vote!!

The polls open at 8:00 AM at the Lebanon Elementary School, 53 Upper Guinea Road, for the Town of Lebanon Vote on the MSAD60 proposed school budget.
The polls will remain open until 8:00 PM.
All registered voters in the Town of Lebanon are encouraged to attend.
The vote comes after a May 7th meeting at the Noble High School where residents were encouraged to come and ask questions regarding the school's 2015-2016 budget.
Only 18 Lebanon residents attended that meeting, out of a total of 56 registered voters from the District.
Please come and vote, and be sure Lebanon's voice is heard!

Only 12 Registered Lebanon Voters Attend Q&A on MSAD60 District Budget.

There were only 12 registered voters from Lebanon, at the MSAD60 School District Budget Meeting tonight. Two Lebanon Town Office people attended and our 3 School Board members. A total of 18 people from Lebanon.
But Lebanon wasn't the only town with low attendance. The budget was passed on to the School District's voters by a written ballot, 47 yes and 8 no.  Fifty six registered voters in all, including town officers, from three towns, and 9 school board members. 
Passed on to the School District's voters, a budget of $13,913,136.00, which was agreed upon in just 45 minutes with no controversy. 
There was discussion on Article 8 about the new GPS and camera systems which will be in place on all buses when school starts in September and some discussion on Article 12, which involved correcting a math error for the Berwick total raised, which is actually $5,432,756.
Just a reminder...polls at the Lebanon Elementary School will be open from 8am-8pm next Tuesday, May 12, 2015, for the townsfolk to vote on their approval for the school year budget.

MSAD60 is offering some videos to help local taxpayers understand the school district's budget.
If you're planning to attend the Budget Informational Session on May 7th at Noble High School at 7 PM, OR if you're going to be voting in the May 12, 2015, MSAD60 Budget Vote, you're probably going to want to watch these videos beforehand.

Lebanon PTO has Special Plans for Teacher Appreciation Week May 4-8, 2015

May 4 through 8 is Teacher Appreciation Week.
The Lebanon PTO has planned special events throughout the week to celebrate all our wonderful Lebanon teachers and is looking for volunteers willing to bake a dessert for Wednesday, and asking for donations of gift cards or gift items for a drawing on Friday.
In addition, it means a lot for the children to say "Thank you!", by making a card or picking a bouquet of Spring flowers for their special teacher.
As parents, you could send your child's teacher an e-mail telling them what you have appreciated about them so far this year.
Let's work together as a community to make this week special for our hard-working, dedicated educators!

Last year the Town of Lebanon only registered 166 registered voters who participated in the MSAD60 Budget Vote.

Noble High School UKnights Humanitarian Club Hosts 5K Walk/Run.

Noble High School’s Humanitarian Club, "UKnights", will be hosting a Walk/Run 5k, on Saturday, May 16, 2015.
True to their Humanitarian concerns, the club will donate all proceeds from this event to their chosen charity,  "Guiding Eyes for the Blind".
Guiding Eyes for the Blind is an organization who raises and trains puppies with a purpose, puppies are given, free of charge, to people who are blind or sight impaired.
Pre-registration is $15 by calling the school at (207) 676-2234 or by e mail at msad60-info@msad60.org 
You may also register for $25 the day of the race.
Registration for children 12 and under is only $5, anytime.
The first 20 paid registrants get a free T-shirt!
There will also be a Raffle, Snacks, and...........a Puppy Kissing Booth!!!!

Guiding Eyes for the Blind is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) agency that depends on the support of individuals, corporations, foundations, and civic organizations such as Lions Clubs to fulfill its mission. They receive no government funding, and provide their renowned Guiding Eyes dogs, plus training and lifetime support, to our blind and visually impaired students at NO COST to them. It costs approximately $45,000 to prepare our students and dogs to become a Guiding Eyes team.
Guiding Eyes also provides specially trained dogs to families that have children with autism through its Heeling Autism program.  This program is also provided at NO COST to the families who are chosen to receive service dogs
Guiding Eyes operates two campuses the first, their Yorktown Heights Headquarters in Yorktown, NY, and their second, The Patterson Canine Development Center in Patterson, NY.
Through their website, www.guidingeyes.org, you have the opportunity to Adopt a puppy who has not passed the rigorous program training, Apply for guide dog services for yourself or a loved one, Apply to become a puppy raiser or foster parents for a stud or brood dog, or make a donation ot any one of their programs.
