University of Southern Maine Offers Cyber Security Training Course.

7/22/2015: University of Southern Maine
Cyber Security Training
Date: July 22, 2015
 Time: 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Location: University of Southern Maine Science Building

Description of Event:
Experience A Cyber Event (aka Evil at the Coffee Shop)The following attacks will be demonstrated and hints how to recognize and or avoid theseThe class is subtitled Evil at the Coffee Shop because this is where most people use public networks but the attacks demonstrated could be use against most small networks.
In the course of this class you will get to experience four common cyber attacks, what they look like, how to recognize them and some methods to mitigate them. The goal is not to turn you into a cyber security expert but just make your online life safer
  • DNS attack
  • Phishing
  • DOS attack
  • Packet Capture
  • Theft of Credit Card Information
The equipment and accounts provided by the Maine Cyber Security Cluster (MCSC), we just need a single active ethernet port with Internet connectivity.

The first attack will show you how simple it is to control where you surf on the net. With this attack the user may think they are connected to facebook.com or their bank but are actually connected to a server under the demonstrators control.
The next attack we will look at a denial of service attack, this is the method that hactavists, such as anonymous, use to disable internet access to sites but can also be used, as it will be in this case, to force an individual off line.
For the third attack we will show a number of phishing emails and how to recognize them what are the tricks and methods you can use to sort these out and avoid the problems they cause.
Packet Capture or sniffing will be demonstrated to show how much information is exposed even when no “attack” has been launched.
Lastly we will show how credit card information can be plucked out of the air.
In all of these cases we will show you how the attack operates, but more importantly how to avoid these malicious efforts and a few options for dealing with these when you do encounter them in the wider world.
This course is being sponsored by Sector Northern New England Area Maritime Security Committee.

Rochester Main Street Organization Hosts Another Successful Blues Fest and BBQ Contest.

Many of us head to Rochester NH for our daily shopping, dining choices, and many of our local residents have businesses in Rochester.
Rochester Main Street is a group of volunteers and downtown business owners who gather together to support some fantastic events designed to bring people together in a community way, with music, food, and lots of community pride and spirit. Proceeds from different events hosted by the volunteer based organization go toward bringing area residents into the downtown area, keeping the town center bustling and full of life and great business opportunities.
On Saturday, July 18, 2015, the Rochester Main Street organization hosted the 4th Annual Rochester Blues Fest and BBQ Contest.

More than 20 groups, businesses and craft vendors lined the River Walk area of Main Street, many offering samples, coupons and raffles, and the music stage (a ramp truck provided by Rochester Truck) provided 6 different groups of musicians performing some fantastic blues favorites and originals.

Newcomers this year, The Bearded Sinners of New Hampshire, left many people asking questions as to why they had been included in a family style festival. Despite their "biker" looks, the group actually is a major local fundraising organization with chapters in 23 states and also in the UK and Australia. The Bearded Sinners strive to support anything and everything local, including Businesses, Music, Art, Culture, and most importantly, people they call Neighbors in the Communities they call home.
Look for the Bearded Sinners at many local events, food drives, concerts and benefit events!!
Their mission statement includes the following: "We give because we love. We give because we care and the only we profit we receive is the satisfaction of knowing that we've made a difference in someone's life. Hugs or handshakes, the thankful smiles of children are what drives us to give back and lend a helping hand. We work tirelessly to better our communities and represent the Bearded Sinners name as the best, THE ONLY club of our type that does what we do."
Family friendly? You betcha!! The group was able to raise over $100 today to benefit "End 68 Hour of Hunger".

There were only 3 entries in the BBQ Contest, Happy Pappy's Country Store from Portland St, Lilac City Grille and Revolution TapRoom & Grill, both from Main Street. Each offered three choices, one each in the categories of BBQ Chicken, BBQ Beef Brisket, and BBQ Pulled Pork. There were no entries in the BBQ Ribs Category.
All the selections were amazing, but it was the Lilac City Grille that took home top honors with first place finishes for BBQ Chiken, Pulled Pork, and the Award for People's Choice for Best BBQ.
Revolution TapRoom & Grill won the first place finish for BBQ Beef Brisket.

Mike the Art Guy (Mike Dolan) created many beautiful paintings.

Spray Paint Artist, Mike Dolan (aka Mike the Art Guy) was the vendor booth that held the most crowd attention with a constant crowd of people watching as Dolan, with only a few applications from various colors of spray paint, created beautiful works of art.  His work was nothing short of amazing and Festival-goers stood, awestruck, as painting after painting were crafted.
As the day came to a close, vendors all said that they were very happy with the turnout of the event and all that we spoke to said that they had hopes of returning again next year!!
The Rochester Main Street Group have a hit on their hands with the Rochester Blues Fest. Wonderful Music, Family Fun, and Delicious BBQ. What more could you ask for on a Summer day in Rochester, NH??

Volunteers Come Together In Milton NH to Create a Memorial Playground

An amazing effort by more than 65 Community Volunteers in the Town of Milton, NH as men, women and children from several generations came together at the entrance to the Milton Town Beach to create a beautiful playground, a loving community tribute to former Milton Selectman, Jim Culverhouse.

Many friends and Culverhouse family members were on hand over the 2 days, 16-20 man hours, that it took to create the beautiful playground.
Culverhouse himself, passed away a few years back, but people in Milton remember how much he loved the children and was instrumental in creating a great Recreational Department to give the young people in town opportunity for sports and other programs right within the town limits of Milton.

Young and Old worked together to make the Culverhouse Playground a Reality

Helping with the project were past and present Selectmen, Department of Public Works, Fire Department, Police Department, Town Clerk, Highway Department, The Friends of the Milton Free Public Library and the Librarians of the Library, the Assessor's Department and many Milton residents and children.

Milton-ite, Les Elder took the time to share some of his photos of the day with me and to let me know how very proud he was of the people in his town. "This is Community with a capital C", said Elder in our phone conversation, "This is what small town living is all about. It was so moving to have everyone there, young, old, town government, residents, business people, family groups, singles... I just can't explain how good that felt."
According to Elder, the playground is free of charge and open to the public.
