7/22/2015: University of Southern Maine
Cyber Security Training
Date: July 22, 2015
 Time: 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Location: University of Southern Maine Science Building

Description of Event:
Experience A Cyber Event (aka Evil at the Coffee Shop)The following attacks will be demonstrated and hints how to recognize and or avoid theseThe class is subtitled Evil at the Coffee Shop because this is where most people use public networks but the attacks demonstrated could be use against most small networks.
In the course of this class you will get to experience four common cyber attacks, what they look like, how to recognize them and some methods to mitigate them. The goal is not to turn you into a cyber security expert but just make your online life safer
  • DNS attack
  • Phishing
  • DOS attack
  • Packet Capture
  • Theft of Credit Card Information
The equipment and accounts provided by the Maine Cyber Security Cluster (MCSC), we just need a single active ethernet port with Internet connectivity.

The first attack will show you how simple it is to control where you surf on the net. With this attack the user may think they are connected to facebook.com or their bank but are actually connected to a server under the demonstrators control.
The next attack we will look at a denial of service attack, this is the method that hactavists, such as anonymous, use to disable internet access to sites but can also be used, as it will be in this case, to force an individual off line.
For the third attack we will show a number of phishing emails and how to recognize them what are the tricks and methods you can use to sort these out and avoid the problems they cause.
Packet Capture or sniffing will be demonstrated to show how much information is exposed even when no “attack” has been launched.
Lastly we will show how credit card information can be plucked out of the air.
In all of these cases we will show you how the attack operates, but more importantly how to avoid these malicious efforts and a few options for dealing with these when you do encounter them in the wider world.
This course is being sponsored by Sector Northern New England Area Maritime Security Committee.
